Why You Shouldn’t Skip Church

Why You Shouldn’t Skip Church

Last week, my pastor sent me an e-mail about the Sermon Team I am on with him and the other pastors. I responded to his question, but had to do some soul purifying first:

Kathi Headshot 2008- smallKathi to Scott: “Hey there – first a confession. Yesterday (Sunday) Roger and I completely slept in. We felt so bad but just couldn’t make it to church. So, we decided to run some errands. Roger and I were in the car and he said ‘Knowing our luck, we’ll probably see someone from church.’

Talking on my phone to my mom I went ahead of Roger into Target and saw…you. And like a two year old – went down a different aisle. I wasn’t raised in the church, but I got all of the guilt of a Jewish and Catholic upbringing combined…”

ScottScott to Kathi: ” Church ditching is not the unforgivable sin, but hiding from your pastor is!  (said with a big out loud laugh)  I just read a story yesterday about someone who hid, her name was Eve. (again, said with a huge smile on my face!)  Don’t take the ribbing personally, I think it’s funny.  If I were you I would run the other way next time because I will shout across Target ‘Hey, Kathi I didn’t see you in church today!”

HELLO – That’s exactly why I avoided him. He would have no problem calling me out at Target.

Kathi to Scott: “Mind if I put this up on my blog – it is pretty funny.”

Scott to Kathi: “You bet, because you know it’s going to show up in a sermon.”

Book Giveaway

Book Giveaway

As you can tell from my post a couple days ago, I read a lot of books (and not just on the kindle!) and I need to clear room on my shelf for the books that I will read this year!  I would love to clear room on my shelves by giving some to my favorite readers.

I’ve listed the books below.  It will be simple to win, all that you need to do is leave a comment with your e-mail, the book you would like and a description in 10 words or less of why you would like it.  How simple is that?

(BTW – if I get multiple entries for a book I will have an unbiased committee – my kids – pick the winner…)

Wake ‘em Up Business Presentations

Oh what a day…

If you follow me on facebook, you already know that we had quite the interesting afternoon.   A neighboring townhome caught fire this afternoon and after an couple of hours spent on the front lawn, we were allowed back inside.  Praise God that our home did not suffer any damage, but please be praying for our neighbors who did.   We are so very thankful that no one was seriously hurt (one neighbor suffered some burns on his hand) and for the San Jose fire department (those guys rock!)

Thanks to everyone who was praying for us (and our furry friends.) I am a very grateful woman.

Shameless Self Promotion – And a Thesis on Paper Books vs. Kindle

Shameless Self Promotion – And a Thesis on Paper Books vs. Kindle

tmp-cover There are just some things that make me feel like a grown-up writer. Having my book come out on Kindle is definitely up there.

I just found out that The Marriage Project (released this month) is now available on Kindle. And that makes me very, very happy.

I know, many of you think Kindle is the downfall of modern civilization. (Or at least the publishing industry.) In fact, when my friend Cathy was at a writer’s retreat and mentioned her Kindle, another author proceeded to give her a lecture about how she was contributing to the demise of independent bookstores everywhere.

Which is hilarious, because besides me, no one has contributed more to the success of independent bookstores that Cathy (as judged by her bookshelves…)kindle

I “read” a lot of books every year. “Read” is in quotes because I also download a lot of books to my iPod to listen to while walking Jake the puggle (pug/beagle mix) or while driving to speaking engagements. (Roger is not  a book on tape fan and therefore does not want to listen to anything while we are driving together, preferring meaningful conversation. Whatever.)

If I read 100 books a year (which, may in fact not be too far off…)I would guess that my breakdown goes something like this:

15 Audible Downloads

20 Amazon Purchases (of actual books)

14 Kindle Downloads

10 Gifts from other friends and authors (either purchased in a store or as a free copy from the publisher – and BTW – I receive a lot more books than I read…)

41 books from Brick and Mortar stores (these would include B&N, Borders, Christian bookstores, independent bookstores, airport bookstores, etc.)

.
So I am interested – what is your breakdown of what your read? Do you own an e-reader and if not – do you want one – or are you morally opposed to it. (Don’t worry, all opinions are welcomed – if not always embraced…)

Welcome to 2011

Welcome to 2011

Yes, I know that I am getting ahead of the game, but hear me out.

I am working on my next book called The Me Project: 21 Days to Living the Life You Were Created For.

And, well… I need your help.

I want to know where you want to be on January 1, 2011. What part of your life do you want to have made some progress on in the year 2010?

• Maybe it’s taking a photography course to become a portrait photographer after the kids are grown.

• Maybe you want to go on a missions trip and need to start figuring our where you are going to go – and what you will do once you get there.

• Do you want to become a Bible study teacher, but don’t know where to start?

• Have you always wanted to write a book, but have put it off until life clams down?

• Or maybe blogging seems really intriguing, but you have no idea where to start.

Do me a favor. Start with me.

OK – so I can’t tell you where to go on your missions trip, but I can help your start exploring some of the dreams God may have planted in your heart.

So, will you be my guinea pig?

We have started a Facebook group: Kathi Lipp’s Book Projects to get started. If you would go join the group and the let me know what your dream is all about, I would love to explore it with you. (And then possibly use you for fodder for my book, if you don’t mind.)

I think it could be pretty exciting. Following where God wants to take us and all.

So come on over.
