For me, I struggle to get rid of kids’ clothes. I always want to get back a portion of the amount I spent (I have no idea why). I donate a bunch of things, but the nice name-brand stuff, I hold on to (hello, piles!!) and try and sell so I can put the money towards clothes that will fit the kids. It makes sense, but with five kids, I have an abundance of clothes to sell and no time to sell them! I also homeschooled for four years and have a ton of curriculum. The best of intentions, but we just never got to half of it! I struggle with parting with it, too!!
I bought homeschool curriculum from a popular publisher for several years. It was highly recommended by a trusted friend and It was a good fit for us then. I told my husband it would be reused by each of our three kids. Well, when the second child was old enough to use the first level, I realized we have moved on to a more eclectic style of education and now we use lots of different materials, not just the single curriculum anymore. The more I think about it, the less likely we are to use the rest of the materials we already bought. Yikes! We’ve spent nearly $2000 on materials that I said would be used on all the kids but which have only been used on one. That’s a lot of guilt and shame.
Great episode. I have an item that I struggled with getting rid of which cost about $5. I had purchased a charcoal tooth powder as I have been trying to be more environmentally conscience about packaging and trying to use more natural cosmetic/beauty aides. I have been using this powder for a while and it creates a mess in the bathroom everytime I brush my teeth- just imagine black charcoal everywhere. I am constantly cleaning the bathroom after each use. I know that it was such a low investment, but I hate to waste things. This morning after listening to your podcast- I discarded the rest. My time and aggravation are well worth the $5! Thank you!
