The living is easy …
Okay, depending on what you use your living room for, maybe the living isn’t all that easy. And whatever you call it (living room, family room, den), it can be a clutter trap. In many houses, the living room sees the worst of every family member’s clutter habits. It can become the dumping ground for All. The. Things.
And if you are the Clutter Monitor, it’s often a full-time job keeping the living room clean.
It Gets Better in the Living Room
I know you want a room you’re not embarrassed to host unexpected guests. And a place where you can relax at the end of the day without feeling all jittery from clutter surrounding you.
We now have that kind of living room. When it came to finding my 20 things, I was frustrated because it was so hard. But then it dawned on me: my years of decluttering are paying off. I can be thrilled with the progress I’ve made.
So for all of you who have had a hard time finding your “things”? Celebrate – it’s working!
Instructions:
– Set up your three boxes/totes and two bags.
– Pick one area to work on. Maybe the TV console or the coffee table. Just pick one area, and if you run out of things to fling there, you can move on.
– Set a timer and go for it. 10 minutes usually can do it, but if you need to put another 10 minutes on the timer, by all means!
Bonus:
Maybe there are other rooms that fall under the “living” category. Your dining room, a den, your family room? Get 20 things out of that room if you have a little extra time and a little extra motivation.
Share Your Fling
After you fling, either tell us about it or share a picture in the comments. Remember, each day (at the end of the Fling) there will be one winner, randomly drawn from the comments, who will receive a copy of The Cure for the Perfect Life from Kathi Lipp and Cheri Gregory. So share below and tell us about your fling.
Our entry way is right with the family/living room so I am constantly working on putting things away. Also working on having kids put away their things as soon as they walk in from school/practice. Each child has a locker spot with shoe bin and place to hang backpack and jackets. Looks great when everyone puts away their stuff!
I have already been working on the living room/play room for a while. I don’t really have anything to fling today from there, except 4 throw pillows that always find there way onto the floor. Glad they are flung 🙂
I’m just catching up since I was busy Mon-Wed this week. So far, laundry room is much better. It is really the furnace, litter box room that has the washer and dryer and some hanging space. Very bare bones. I flung some old bottles of detergent and some other items. I had a pile of clothes that have been hanging there forever that are covered in dust which are currently in the washer getting ready for Goodwill. 🙂 While I was downstairs, I vacuumed the family room and folded all the blankets, fluffed the pillows and picked up clutter before vacuuming the tile and steps going up as well. I am loving this Spring Fling! I really need to get moving….
Long day yesterday-out of the house from 7-9, so glad my living room is pretty well together. Did not get to the bonus fling in the family room but was able to tidy up the living room this morning and return 10 wayward items to their correct home.
That is the only room in the house that it is clutter free pretty much all the time so it was super easy today!!

I had to dig deep to find 20 items for todays livingroom challenge. This process sure curves my appetite to purchase items for my home!
Worked more on the bookshelves that reside in the living room, finding more books to fling! Hubs has a growing pile of computer bags, video equipment, unopened packages, and other loosely-related “office” stuff. While the presence and handling of said pile is part of our marital dance (haha–he drives me crazy with his piles!!), I found inspiration in a nearby wall cabinet that might be a viable place for him to store the more legitimate items (#flingtherest #happywifehappylife #ownthehearthlikeaboss). So I’m off to organize the cabinet, which hasn’t been touched since we moved in four years ago–and it’s ripe for flinging.
I would like to get rid off all of our DVDs- we seriously watch everything onlin now- but for my husband that is a no go. But he did agree to putting all the DVDs in soft cases which holds about 50 movies and I can toss the cases. I think that is a win.
Ahhh cleaned off the entertainment center today, wow looks so good. I can’t wait for my hubby to come home and see – see that he can see the tv clearly, haha! Thanks!
Living Room is pretty de-cluttered, it is so nice to see the efforts paying off! I am going to tackle the bonus suggestion of family room as there is much there that can go!
Living room cleaned and organized but now I am heading back into the laundry room to finish it since I went to the doctor yesterday with my daughter in law who is expecting our 3rd granddaughter any time now! Thank you Kathi for doing this and I love our Facebook group.
You are exactly right! When we start seeing that we don’t really have 20 things to get rid of that means our decluttering is starting to pay off!! It’s like my clean, organized linen closet – I just keep going back to it, opening the door and staring at how wonderfully organized it is!! hahaha Thanks for all the good encouragement!
